And the Rioting that Followed his Murder

What do you see when you see a black man?

A student? An athlete? A hero? A thug? A criminal? A villain?

What is perception and what is reality?

A friend of mine posted an article on George Floyd from Christianity Today. The man used to live in Houston’s Third Ward. And he was a minister to troubled youth there. He did good works. He was honored and loved.

This was not a thug or a career criminal. This was a man of God trying to make the world a better place.

And he died. Murdered. By a man sworn to protect and serve.

Who did the officer protect and serve when he killed a man face-down on the pavement, his hands cuffed?

Another photo that I saw made it even more clear what was happening. There were three officers in all with their knees pressed down on Mr. Floyd. Why did there need to be three holding him down?

Then, after the man died, the officers were fired. Alright. But there was a delay until they were jailed. And into the breach came protests. And then looting and arson.

The images of a police station burning are vivid and stark. And sad, so sad. Because anarchy just serves to drive apart those who…
