A friend of mine who was in her 80s when I was in my 20s told me that when she was a kid, if a woman needed an abortion, she would go to her family doctor. If it was early in the pregnancy, he'd help her "take care of it". If it was later in the pregnancy, he'd tell her no.

I think people were much more religious in those days but also more pragmatic?
