My parents are from India. My mother’s father marched with Mahatma Gandhi to the sea to make salt. He was jailed and tortured. He was one of the freedom fighters for India.

Like Mahatma Gandhi, he believed in peace, freedom and equality.

Gandhi wanted to unite all Indians and remove divisions. He offered to give the Muslims of India control of the government if that would avoid partition. He told Indians they should all be brothers despite differences in religion. He believed in active non-violence.

He was assassinated.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an admirer of Gandhi. While the two men never met, King learned about Gandhi through his writings. He took a trip to India in 1959 and wrote that Gandhi was a “guiding light”. Martin Luther King Jr. marched for change. He and his followers were righteous and peaceful.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an amazing speaker. His “I have a Dream” speech is a masterpiece. In it he says, “I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”
