I recently read about the sad story of Naima Houder-Mohammed. I have a great deal of sympathy for her because, like her, I was diagnosed with cancer as a relatively young woman. I was 36 the first time I was found to have an aggressive cancer. Naima was only in her 20s.

In May of 2010, she was diagnosed with breast cancer while serving as a captain in the British army.

She was declared cancer-free after treatment, but in 2012 the cancer had returned. Because of how it had progressed, end-of-life care was offered.

Again, the similarities between us made my heart cry for her.

My cancer has also returned, and I was also offered end-of-life care.

So far, I’ve been able to avoid being bed-ridden. Like Naima, I’ve been doing various alternative treatments in addition to traditional modalities such as surgery and radiation. Tomorrow I start my first round of chemo.

According to Afzal Amin, one of Naima’s friends and a fellow officer, she was a fighter. She fought to get through Sandhurst and through her military training.

Unfortunately, Naima trusted Dr. Robert Young, who offered her hope through alternative treatment options.
