Are Chinese Tourists The New Ugly Americans?
Success can lead to arrogance
People often have a love/hate relationship with tourists. On the one hand, they love the boost to the local economy. And some people like to meet and interact with those from distant lands. I’ve had men try to pick me up everywhere I’ve traveled solo and a few places I visited with a partner.
On the other hand, people hate the crowds and inflation that are consequences of high tourism. Locals are priced out of popular areas and have to deal with congestion and decreased accessibility to services.
However, as long as the tourists are well behaved and generous, they can be welcome.
Hence the general popularity of the Japanese. They tend to be polite. They are clean and well-mannered, seldom make too much noise, don’t harass waitresses or pee in fountains, and they tend to spend a lot of money. What’s not to like?
Other groups are less well-liked.
One stereotype that is no longer accurate, at least in Europe, is the ugly American.
Some still exist.
They are the ones who complain about how everything is better in Kansas, who insist on either eating at McDonalds or putting ketchup on their snails, and who stand gawking in the middle of busy…
