In striving to embrace a healthier lifestyle, many people are consuming more non-dairy options such as vegetarian protein powders, veggie burgers, soy sausage, etc. However, unless these are organic, you should avoid them, especially if they contain:

  • textured soy protein
  • soy protein isolate
  • textured vegetable protein

These are all ultraprocessed ingredients that have had valuable nutrients stripped out. Of these, TVP might be the worse since is can be made from cottonseed.

These products no longer contain:

  • the natural oils in the plant
  • vitamins and minerals
  • fiber

These nutrients are found in the whole soybean and in other whole protein sources such as lentils, eggs, fish, beef, etc. They help your body digest and use the protein source.

When you eat an ultraprocessed type of protein such as TVP (textured vegetable protein), your body has to “steal” the nutrients it needs to digest and use the protein from your liver, muscle tissues, etc.

In fact, according to this article, ultraprocessed foods can lead to liver disease.
