As If Cancer Wasn’t Enough, Now I’ve Got To Deal With The IRS

It’s OK, I’ve got a plan

Yesterday I got a certified letter from the IRS. Apparently, they think I owe them taxes for income that I never received.

Supposedly back in 2020, I received a large sum from a railroad company. Except I’ve never worked for any such company, or invested in them, or had anything to do with them. I never received the money. I wish I had. I would much rather pay the taxes and have gotten the lump sum! It would have been helpful.

I suspect someone accidentally switched some digits around and confused me with someone else. However, I’m puzzled about how to prove this. Do I call the company and ask them to send documentation showing they never sent me anything?

In the past, when there have been issues or concerns re. my taxes, I’ve just called them directly and talked to an agent. Unfortunately, the process is never easy even when the issues are trivial — having to run a gamut before being able to talk to a real person, being put on hold for hours, being disconnected…

This time around, I don’t have the energy. Cooking an omelet wears me out. Plus the amount is pretty large and I’m not sure how to get things cleared up. I suspect this will involve actual expertise. So I’m hiring someone.
