Being Grateful and Helping Others
The right attitude makes all the difference
I called my friend Tracy today and asked her how she was doing.
“We’re doing fine, though, of course, Adam’s had a pay reduction.”
“Oh no,” I said. “Are you OK?”
“Yeah, we’re fine,” she said. “I mean, we’ve had to tighten our belt a bit, but we agree with the reason.”
“What do you mean?”
“Our company’s decided not to lay people off,” she explained. “But in order to do that, everyone’s had to take a cut. The CEO and top management took the biggest hit, at 20%.”
“Which is as it should be,” I said.
“Yeah. And Adam had to take a 10% cut, but we’re happy with the decision because it means people have jobs.”
I thought about this after we hung up. What a gracious attitude. I know that her husband would be considered one of the essential workers in that company. So he was not at risk for losing his job. Yet they care enough about others to be cheerful about a fairly substantial loss of income.
It made me consider my own situation and made me realize how grateful I am.
