Belize is for lovers
It has everything from adventure to romance
In a previous life I was married.
We loved and laughed in Paris and Orlando, Ireland and Andover, New York City and Estes Park, The Grand Canyon and Pike’s Peak. By far our most romantic destination was Belize.
I don’t care what Virginia’s billboards say, it’s Belize that’s for lovers.
I first learned of this Central American paradise as a graduate student. One of my fellows went on to work for the Ministry of Tourism there. He rhapsodized about the rain forests, the wildlife, the tropical reefs and the ancient culture.
So when I got married and we were trying to figure out where to go for our honeymoon, I mentioned Belize. Since my husband was a scuba diver who’d heard about the Blue Hole, he was instantly sold.
We checked in to a resort in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye. This is the place Madonna sings about in La Isla Bonita. And it is a beautiful island. The tropical breeze really does caress your skin like a lover’s whispering touch and nature is both accessible and free.
We held hands as we walked on soft sandy beaches. We snorkeled in Shark Ray Alley. My hands still remember how soft were the bellies of the Manta Rays that grew to the size of a man and the curious, gentle press…
