I was enchanted and delighted

Before I had cancer, I liked to travel. Starting out, I didn’t have much money, so I traveled on a shoestring. After I got married, though, we were able to afford a few nicer vacations before I got cancer and everything went to pay medical bills.

Yes, I had insurance, and no, it wasn’t enough.

However, before all that — one of the best vacations I took was to Belize.

Belize is both part of the Caribbean and also Central America. It has ancient Maya pyramids, amazing scuba diving, huge biodiversity, and a mix of cultures. The official language is English so, at least in the main tourist areas and expat enclaves, it’s easy to get around.

If you also speak Spanish, you can get around pretty well just about anywhere.

There are some places which are not safe, but that’s no different than when you are in the United States. You wouldn’t wander through East St. Louis, would you? So why would you think comparable parts of Belize City are safe?

In Belize, the safest option is to take guided tours. If you get a decent guide, they will also teach you about their country. Finding someone who is passionate about his homeland and who likes people is the key.
