British Foods Loved By This American

The scones and the roasts are lovely, but don’t ask me to try haggis

Many years ago, friends of mine and I visited England. We mostly stayed in London with a couple of side trips. It was my first trip to Europe.

I had a great time, and enjoyed the food, for the most part, including the excellent Indian restaurants, which were far superior to most American places outside of enclaves such as Jackson Heights in New York.

Years later, living in Texas, I met some British expats who introduced me to a local places that served authentic British fare. One coffee shop actually imported their scones and tarts from the United Kingdom. Another made their own scones but imported their clotted cream, jam, and lemon curd.

Here are some of the British treats this American finds most yummy. You will notice haggis is nowhere to be found on this list. Hopefully my lack of appreciation for this traditional dish does not offend anyone.

In addition to haggis, one other British dish I wasn’t a fan of — steak and kidney pie. I actually did not try it, but a friend ordered it at a pub and told me it was like a form of culinary Russian roulette. His mouth was in a state of dread, not sure if he’d get delicious steak or awful kidney!
