Dad wanted to look out for girlfriend. When gf told him how she felt, how did he respond? If he backed off, then no problems. If he feels the need to be in control - red flag.

If ex and GF are friendly and can cooperate to care for the child - that is a great thing. Dad should do what he can to support that.
