It didn’t just affect American blacks and it is still going on today
I provide references in this article so that you can look up all of my sources. If you think a source is incorrect, please let me know why and provide alternative sources. Just to be clear, slavery is evil. There is no justification for slavery.
I got into a discussion with a black person on Medium about slavery.
We both agreed slavery was wrong. I can’t imagine anyone in this day and age thinking it’s OK. Beyond that, though… we disagreed quite a bit. Thankfully, politely.
However, she thinks slavery is something that only happened to American black people.
Obviously, she has never read history. Because slavery has been around for thousands of years, in one form or another. And American slavery was not even the worst form. Even if you just look at the Atlantic slave trade in the early modern era — the time period from 1450 to 1800 — the death rates among slaves at large Caribbean plantations were astonishing.
Over 90% of slaves shipped from Africa were sent to the Caribbean and South America. Only 6% were sent to North America. However, by 1825, the US population of those of African descent made up 25% of the total in the New World.
