Do I Need To Be Passionate About Everything?
My choices may not match with yours
I got into a discussion today with someone who is passionate about LGBTQ issues. I’m not.
Not because I don’t care. I think everyone deserves to be treated fairly and I am against bigotry. When I have been confronted with bigoted behavior, I have spoken up.
However, caring does not equate to passion.
I am passionate about other areas such as the environment, poverty, animal welfare and health.
And there is nothing wrong with this, just like there is nothing wrong with someone else being lukewarm about my concerns but passionate about LGBTQ issues.
The fact is that we all have a limited bandwidth.
I don’t have the energy to think about everything, particularly since I am now fighting a metastatic brain cancer.
When someone expects me to become active in what is their pet project while I am dealing with some real challenges — that speaks to their own narcissism more than anything else.
The fact is that most people have lives. They have to pay their bills, look after their own health, and they may have children or elderly parents to care for. Many people feel overburdened. Expecting them to also spend time and…
