except there have been fights and actual violence on planes. if it was a large white man, or, heck, a large woman, that could be scary given how crazy people are. the guy's race is irrelevant except that everything becomes about race.

And, sometimes it is! Sometimes the person absolutely is being racist. But asking someone to listen to their music on headphones and expecting them not to take over part of your space is just basic politeness.
