Finding Those Who Value You
A lesson from a modern-day fable
A friend of mine recently shared a story with me that made me think. I consider it a modern version of a fable since it is a story that teaches a lesson.
The story has been shared on social media, so you may have read it already. If your response was — OK, that’s interesting, then it didn’t help you. But if it made you re-evaluate life, then it could be life-changing.
Here is the story:
A girl graduated with honors. Her father said to her, “I’d like to reward you by giving you this Jeep I bought many years ago. I know it’s old, but I took good care of it and it still runs. Before I sign the deed over to you, though, I’d like you to take it to the local used car dealer and ask them what they would offer you for it.”
When the daughter returned, she told her father, “The dealer offered me $1000 because it’s so old.”
The father nodded as if that was what he expected.
“Now, take it to the pawnshop,” he told his daughter.
When she returned, she told him, “The pawnshop only offered me $100.”
The father then told his daughter to visit a car club and ask what they would give for the car.
