Fond Memories of Angelica’s Kitchen in The East Village
It was the first vegan restaurant I went to
I grew up in New York City. While my home was in Queens, I went to school in Manhattan, at Stuyvesant High School, which was close to Union Square Park.
I’d commute to school via the subway, which wasn’t all that great, but I had a school pass so that it was a cheap way for me to get around. I took advantage of that pass to explore other parts of the City on pleasant days, sometimes by myself and sometimes with friends.
One of my best friends was a Jewish girl named Sarah who was one of the kindest people I knew.
She knew I was broke, so sometimes she treated me to an ice-cream cone or other small treat while we wandered together. We would sit on the grass in Central Park after school sometimes. Other times we’d wander through the Village or around the New York University campus.
She knew I was a vegetarian, so one time she took me to Angelica’s Kitchen which was located on St. Mark’s Street in the East Village.
This was a vegan restaurant that was way before its time. Everything they served was organic and most of the produce was supplied by local farms. It was farm-to-market before that became a thing.
