Glycemic Index — Why It Matters
And yes, you can eat some sweets as long as you check the ingredients
I had oatmeal for breakfast this morning.
Actually, I had two breakfasts — the first was a 2 egg mushroom omelette when I first got up. The second was the oatmeal, which Mom made when she woke up.
But my Mom is a diabetic, so should she be eating oatmeal? And I am fighting cancer, so I also need to be careful about what I eat. Is it healthy for us to eat grains?
Some people on low-carb diets avoid oats. However, IMHO, the most important consideration when it comes to your health is not carbs per se but glycemic index (or GI) scale.
Don’t get me wrong — low carb diets are great for some people. And low carb typically also means low GI. However, many condiments, such as steak sauce, can have high fructose corn syrup. And some protein powders have a high GI, so it’s important to read labels even if you are on a low carb eating plan.
For those of us who include healthy carbs into our eating plan — knowing the GI of the food is critical.
