When two people are married, it’s important they are on the same page on major issues and that they can communicate and compromise. One major issue that can result in the breakup of a marriage is disagreement on finances.

This was one reason a friend of mine didn’t marry his long term girlfriend. They had lived together for many years and several times he came close to proposing, but she refused to curb her spending. She earned about the same amount as he did, but while he regularly put some mone aside, she never did, and sometimes she would ask him to help her out. He always did, but he grew to resent her behavior.

Eventually they broke up.

Another friend recently told me about a couple she read about whose financial disagreements veered towards actual cruelty.

They both wanted a child and he agreed to pay half of costs associated with the child. But, there’s the rub — he told her he did not agree to pay for her medical care prior to having the baby.

She was responsible for paying for all her exams prior to the birth.

He had reluctantly agreed to pay for half the expenses associated with actually giving birth, but then there was a complication.
