So I broke up with him

In my 20s, I was dating someone who I had worked with. I left that job and moved, but we continued to date and we were getting serious enough that we probably would have gotten married, except that his mother stepped in.

She was a widow who had been left with two sons, aged 16 and 14.

I was dating her older son when he was in his early 30s.

He and I were a good match for many reasons and while we had the occasional argument, we got along very well. Plus we found each other attractive. I knew he was deeply in love with me from various gestures he made and I loved him too.

So what happened?

The closer I got to him, the more his mother seemed to be involved. And he never said anything to her.

At first I didn’t mind.

When we started dating, we lived in South Carolina, and she lived in Georgia. We’d go down together once a month so he could do chores around the house for her. His brother was already married so my guy did most of this.

Because I grew up in an Indian culture that emphasized strong family ties, I had no issues with going down once a month to help out my boyfriend’s mom. I enjoyed chatting with her and liked visiting Atlanta.
