He Was Too Rich To Marry Me

He didn’t want to lose his inheritance

When I was in graduate school, I met a guy who came from a wealthy family. His father owned a business that made products for dogs. Given how much Americans love their pets, it’s not surprising that the company made money.

I liked the man and enjoyed spending time with him, but I wasn’t in love.

However, I was in an engineering program that demanded a lot of focus, so I wasn’t looking to find “Mr. Right.” I didn’t have time for a serious relationship. I wanted someone I could go out with a couple of times a month, just to go do something fun together.

This guy, let’s call him Ben, was happy to comply. He told me up front he wasn’t looking for anything serious either. He was easy to get along with as well as treating me with respect. For example, he always held the door open for me, and one time when I was cold he draped his jacket over me.

Given the difference in our financial situation, he assumed he’d pay for our dates. I offered to chip in a few times but he told me not to worry about it.

Things went well for a while. But then… he started to get serious.

He wanted to take me away for the weekend, on a ski trip.
