A friend of mine is in her late 70s. She and her husband have been married for over 50 years. He was her college sweetheart and she loves him dearly.

He is also in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. We were talking about the situation today.

It’s a hard disease to deal with. Our local community helps.

There is a men’s group at the community center where he goes to a weekly meeting. He’s been going there for years, from a time when he was mentally still sharp. Those old friends still welcome him even though he can no longer always keep up with the conversation. But they are always glad to see him and let him know that.

People at our church go out of their way to interact with him.

This last weekend, his wife watched from a distance as he became acquainted with someone he hadn’t really gotten to know. They have been coming to the church for a few months but had never really chatted with him.

His wife saw them chat for a while, though, and it made her smile to see how patient they were with him. Afterward, he told his wife about the conversation. It made him so happy.
