My friend S called me today to check up on me. She knows I am dealing with cancer that has entered into my bones. It’s worrisome and I’m in some pain, so I was not as cheerful as I normally am.

She was really sympathetic until her husband called her, and she said, “Hey, D is calling me, I have to go.”

I could tell she had wanted to talk longer, but that is not the way their marriage works.

Anytime S and I make plans, we have to work around his schedule. At one point, we were talking about doing an overnight trip to Dallas to visit one of the museums. She was super excited about it. Then we stopped by her place and we mentioned it to D.

The look on his face…

He looked suspicious and paranoid.

She and I never made it to Dallas.

While she is a great friend when she’s free, her life revolves around her family. There is nothing wrong with that, necessarily.

Another friend of mine has three children, and she is very family focused. However, she is also an artist who works out of her home. When she wants to visit close friends or go to an artist’s retreat, her husband encourages her. He will look after their children and hold down the fort.
