Here is what I said:
"I feel sorry for the mother but honestly, she is responsible for the child's death"
In other words, she deserves to be punished under the law for the death of the child.
However, I am a Christian and I believe in both justice and mercy. I can desire this woman to pay her penalty according to the law while also feeling sorry for her.
I have known addicts and seen how they destroy their own lives as well as those around them. Addiction is a horrible burden and so yes, I do feel sorry for addicts. That doesn't mean I approve of their behavior.
Christ said - he who has not sinned, cast the first stone.
If you have never hurt someone, then you can feel free to judge others. But if you have ever hurt another person - then it becomes a matter of degree. I have never killed anyone, but I have hurt people and I regret that.
So I understand and feel compassion for others who have done that.
None of this means I don't want this woman to be penalized under the law for the death of that child. However, she will have to live with her guilt and loss for the rest of her life and I would not wish that pain on anyone.
