Homeschooling Might Be Best Option For Minorities
As well as for many other types of students
According to the Los Angeles Times, 2 out of 3 California students did not meet state math standards and half did not meet English standards. However, among minority students, the numbers are even grimmer.
84% of black students and 79% of Latinos did not meet state math standards.
While it’s easy to blame the pandemic, the reality is that even before COVID-19, 60% of California students were testing below grade level in math and nearly half below grade level in English.
To be honest, even if students pass the standards — the standards are set fairly low, and California discourages mathematically gifted students from achieving their full potential. The argument seems to be that it’s not equitable to admit that some students are more skilled when it comes to math and would benefit from advanced courses.
However, all students are unique. Just like some kids love math, others hate it but excel at history, art, music, or literature. But instead of providing more choices for bright students, the school system seems intent on pursuing “equity”, which actually results in making things harder for black and brown students.
