I agree with you. I thought the book was well written and interesting. The movie is less so, but the acting is solid (except for Paul - I think the actor who played him was mediocre) and the visuals were great.
The book was based on history. Well, hate to break it to people, throughout most of history, men have tended to be in power. That's not a good thing in many ways but it's reality.
Since the original novel was based partly on history (I think Frank Herbert mentioned Lawrence of Arabia as one inspiration), of course it was going to reflect historical realities. So what? We also have books and movies that feature female protagonists or people of color in positions of power. One reason I loved Aliens was that Sigourney Weaver kicked butt. But Dune was trying to be true to Frank Herbert's novel and that's a good thing, at least to fans of the books.
