I am not black, and I went to MIT, and frankly, this kind of thing is par for the course at these top universities. I have had white friends, Asian friends and also black friends all report the same type of behavior from professors at MIT, Harvard and other top schools (I went to Stuyvesant High School so I've got many friends who have been to these places). I doubt his lack of helpfulness was due to your skin color.

When I did graduate work at Colorado State University, which is NOT top tier, I got lots of support from professors and counselors. When I went to Purdue for my PhD - I got none. Very unfriendly, perfunctory at best attitudes.

This is not due to racism or sexism, it is the university culture at the top schools. They know they are the top, they don't have to work to serve the students who go there, so they don't.
