I Dodged A Bullet

In-laws can be tricky when your partner won’t take your side

Once upon a time, I dated tall, dark, and handsome. At least I found him handsome. He had coal-black hair and bright blue eyes. I think he must have had Irish ancestry.

We were very compatible. We were also co-workers.

While it’s supposed to be a no-no to date people you work with, if you’re an engineer working 50–60 hour weeks, those are who you hang out with. Of course, office romances happen.

We started off as friends.

There was a group of us who’d go out to lunch, and sometimes he was part of the group. Then some of us went to the theater.

After, he and I got to talking, and next thing you know, we were dating.

It was a relaxed, fun relationship. We were both geeks, we had a lot of the same friends, and we understood having to work overtime.

Then I met his mother.

She was a widow and he was her oldest son. Her younger son had married and moved away. But her eldest, the man I was dating, lived close enough to drive down to see her once a month to take care of chores for her.

Once we’d been dating for a few months, I went down with him for a weekend. I had a nice time.
