I got on pretty well with my in-laws. Early in the marriage, his mom said something critical of me to my husband and he hung up on her. She never did that again. So having a spouse who has your back is helpful.

I made a point of always sending her something for mother's day and her birthday. She and I became friends over time.

The thing is, you have to stand up for yourself while still being respectful and kind. And your husband has to have your back. If he is a "momma's boy" when you are dating, don't marry him.
