I grew up in NYC and now I live in Texas. When I lived in New York, I never had a hard time with my weight — because I walked everywhere. Having a car is a liability in the City and many families don’t own them. We walk or take the subway. In that sense, New York is like a European city.

Fast forward to my life now, and I’ve had the same experience when I decide to walk the mile round trip to the store and back. Part of my desire to do this was from an environmental viewpoint, why not lower my greenhouse gas consumption by walking more? And I had neighbors stop and ask me if I needed a ride… it was very sweet but also annoying.
