I had a rescue dog, a collie, and I would hug her, but in an “open” way so she could move away if she wanted to. I would drape one arm over her and give her a squeeze, then move away. Sometimes she rested into me and we’d cuddle, sometimes she’d pull away and I’d let her go. Because she always had the option, she seemed to be pretty happy.
