I love the idea of offering to take her to the park to meet her grandfather and DOING something together - having him push her gently on a swing, or show her how to throw a ball. Something where he feels he is actively engaged since he probably has no clue how to relate to her in terms of conversation but throw a ball? Sure.

And yes his medical issues may need to be addressed.
