I remember reading that a castrated male slave suitable to be a eunuch was 7 times as expensive as an intact male. This was because 6 out of 7 boys who were castrated died due to either blood loss or infection. The castration was brutal, no anesthetic. I can't even imagine what impact that had in terms of emotional and mental trauma for those who survived.

I was reading that Mauritania did not abolish slavery until 2007 as well, yet even after they finally got rid of it, many slaves were not told they were now free.
