I used to be a vegan but had to start adding some animal products for my health. I didn't want to, but if I don't get a small amount.. but I try to get from humane sources.
The problem is nothing is completely humane. However, prior to agriculture becoming an "industry", small farms were the norm. While there was still cruelty, it was less the norm.
I used to get my dairy from a local organic farmer. She and her husband only had a few cows and they were pastured in lovely meadows with trees for shade and a natural pond. When calves were born, the male calves were allowed to stay with their mothers until weaned. They were eventually killed for meat, but while they were alive, they enjoyed companionship, fresh air, and sunshine.
When she sold her farm, I stopped drinking milk.
I am against factory farming, animal testing and animals being used in research, and cruelty in general. In an ideal world we could all be vegans. In an ideal world we would live in harmony with nature.
Which, BTW, is another reason to get rid of modern agriculture - it is horrible for the land. Not just factory farming, which is horrible, but even growing crops. I try to support regenertative agriculture as much as I can.
