I would love to travel and have thought about couchsurfing IF the people were decent and respectful. Ironically, I have found really good AirBnB experiences. When a friend and I stayed at an AirBnB in New Orleans, our hosts made us delicious breakfasts and chatted with us while we ate. They lent us their umbrella and gave us tips on where to go.

But... we also were gracious guests. We didn't get them anything (if I had been couchsurfing and had been staying for free, I would have offered to cook a meal or bought a bottle of wine to share) but we did chat with our hosts, we offered to wash dishes after breakfast and we made sure to leave our rooms spotless. Which they appreciated.

It's not hard to be a gracious host or guest. Just be a respectful and decent human being.
