I'm basically libertarian, so I am for anything that empowers people.
The reality is that women WERE discriminated against. Berthe Morisot was a brilliant painter but if she hadn't married a supportive man, she would have had to give up art when she got married. Many women were forced to make that choice. Florence Nightingale, who saved so many lives during the Crimean War, never got married because if she had, she would not have been able to do her work.
This is a choice that European women had to make. It was worse in places like India or China.
The problem is not that women are now given more equality, the problem is that the pendulum has swung too far the other way.
If we got rid of all the special treatment, quotas, etc., we'd find that, say 80%-90% of the high achievers in fields like mathematics would be men, but there would still be women, like Persian Fields Medal recipient Maryam Mirzakhani, who achieved at the top level.
It's important to allow equal access to all people, regardless of gender, race, caste, etc. However, as long as they have access, it's up to them to succeed or not. The minute you start providing preferential treatment to any group, you create conflict.
