I’m Not Eating Turkey For Thanksgiving

Because it’s about the people, not the food

When I was married, we always had turkey. We’d get pasture-raised organic turkeys that were often huge, and we’d invite friends to share with us. They’d bring side dishes and desserts. We would end up in tryptophan induced comas.

When I was single and in my 20s, I’d have Thanksgiving with friends and sometimes we’d have turkey. But not always. We usually did something potluck though sometimes a family would invite me and provide everything. I’d bring a bottle of wine or the bread.

And a couple of years, we volunteered at a local soup kitchen to feed the homeless. Those were actually some of my favorite holidays.

This year, it’s going to be as small celebration. My mother, myself, and the man in my life. And our assorted pets.

Mom is a vegetarian. And she’s Indian.

So we’re having a traditional Indian meal that we are ordering so no one has to cook. I got some hummus and carrot sticks and pita crisps so we have an appetizer we can nosh on while waiting for our Indian take-out to be delivered.

I’m pretty happy with this because it’s sorta minimalistic. I am still dealing with the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment, so I don’t have a lot of energy…
