As the title said - MGTOW isn't anything new.

In terms of seclusion - both men and women did this. In Europe, there were convents where women were able to avoid men as well. In China, there were female monks.

However, the difference - the monks and nuns wanted a pure life away from distractions. MGTOW today seem to actively hate women.

I've known Christian monks and nuns - they don't hate the opposite sex. I've also known Tibetan monks. Again, no hatred.
