My gay friend refuses to come for ice cream

Once upon a time, when I lived in Wichita Falls, I invited a lesbian friend of mine to my church. I also invited a Wiccan friend. In fact, I asked them both at the same time. We were all out for coffee and I mentioned my church had an ice cream social the next week and they were both welcome to come.

My Wiccan friend came but my gay friend didn’t. No biggie. A couple of weeks later she told me she’d wanted to come, but decided not to because she wasn’t sure she’d be welcome.

“Why would I have invited you if I didn’t think they’d welcome you?” I asked her. “Besides, why would I even go to a church that wouldn’t welcome you?”

We talked some more about her experiences in churches. I got some perspective. Which was eye-opening but also made me sad.
