Are men more likely to abandon their partners, or is it more complex?

I recently read an article on Medium about men who left their sick wives:

Unlike many articles on this site, this one is well sourced. You can read the data for yourself as well as anecdotal evidence.

As someone who has had cancer and who is currently fighting metastatic brain, lung, and liver cancer, the above article hit home for me. I think the author did a very good job. She also inspired me to write this article.

Here are my thoughts…

While statistically, men are more likely to abandon their wives if they get sick, it’s not all men. Some men can be very devoted to their partners. And the other side of the coin is that men are are more likely to lose their partners if they lose their jobs.

However, in both of these situations — if you dig below the surface, you will find it’s more complex than you may think.
