Note: This is the sixth chapter of my novel, “Midnight and the Shield of Mars”. The first chapter can be found here. The fifth chapter is here. The seventh chapter is here. I publish a chapter twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturday.

When he awoke, his head felt like it was full of cotton and his mouth tasted awful. The sun angled straight into his face, adding to his misery. He groaned, turned over and tried to go back to sleep, but it wasn’t happening. With a sigh he stumbled to his feet. He desperately wanted some water to clear out his mouth. Well, there was no water in his canteen. He’d drained it the night before. That trick was supposed to help with the headache. Why wasn’t it working?

He itched. He looked down at himself in dismay. His pale flesh was already pink from the sun. And he had sand everywhere.

He shook out his clothes and put them on, wincing as the grit irritated his skin. His boots were the worst, he took them off and shook them out twice, but there was still sand in them. Finally he shook out his cloak, folded it up and put it in his pack along with the pot, which he re-filled with the sacks of provisions. He made sure the information packet was still safe and then he set off.
