Midnight: Interactions with the Sprites
Chapter Seven of Midnight and the Shield of Mars
Note: This is the seventh chapter of my novel, “Midnight and the Shield of Mars”. The first chapter can be found here. The sixth chapter is here. I publish a chapter twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturday.
Midnight took his pack with him as he searched. It was too important to leave unguarded even in the relative security of his cave. He found an area near the Sprites’ glade that he thought would be a decent place to work — it was out of the wind and had a clearing with several flat boulders that would serve as tables. He made another fire and brewed another pot of tea. Yerba leaf was not his favorite but had a bracing effect on his mind and he needed all the sharpness he had right now. Midnight turned to the third map once he was settled. This showed the sky gates that would allow transport to Olympus. These were magical doors — when you walked through one on Ketu, you walked out at Olympus. The gods had set these up, from what Midnight had heard, to allow their servants to conveniently travel up to their estates and then back home again. Because of course the gods didn’t want mere mortals actually living with them! Each sky gate on Ketu corresponded to one on Olympus, and both sets were well guarded.
