Midnight stole a few things from the pantry under the stairs. Bread, cheese and a wizened apple. He filled his flask with small beer. Then he hurried from the inn and the village. He didn’t want either assassins or angry farmers to see him.

He ate his breakfast as he walked. The rain had stopped. As the sun rose, it glinted off puddles. The earth smelled fragrant. He walked past fallow fields full of flowers.

By all rights he should be happy. His belly was full and he’d spent the night with a pretty girl. But the Guild assassins were on his trail. At least a wet road was better than a dusty one.

A few hours later, as the muggy heat beat down, he changed his mind. He began to fantasize about the horrible things he’d do to Esmeralda, the reason he was banished from the Guild, the reason the assassins were after him…

So lost was he in pleasant dark fantasy the carriage almost ran him down before he heard it. He leaped off the road with a curse, landing in water to…
