Midnight cursed the Guild as he trudged through the rain. He should be home with a lover and fine brandy instead of dodging assassins in a downpour. He cursed some more as the waterproof spell on his cloak started to fail and clammy trails trickled down his back.

A light in the distance gave him hope. It didn’t matter that the public houses in Willowbrook Duchy were a haven for fleas. He wanted a dry bed. Not that he could afford a room, but he could buy a meal and sneak into the hayloft if his charm didn’t work to get him an invite from a lady.

He could tell the light was from an inn, even at a distance, thanks to his night vision. He got that from his mother, who was part Elf. He checked the lay of the land as he got close to the building. He didn’t want to be surprised by the assassins.

The inn had a sign with a rampant rooster hanging askew above the entrance Midnight ducked underneath to go inside. He shut the door quickly behind him to keep out the rain, and stood for a moment to scope…
