Parle-G biscuits on our kitchen counter

Show any Indian the image of the little girl above, and they will know the reference. Most Indians have had these slightly sweet biscuits.

Mom brought some home a couple of days ago when she saw them in an Indian store where they were being sold in packs of 5 for a dollar. They are a bargain, but that’s not why Mom brought them home.

She bought them because of the happy memories they reminded her of. She shared stories of my childhood with me as we ate some.

They are small in size and hard, so they remind me a bit of Scottish shortbread. However, they are not made with butter. Because of their texture and size, they are perfect with tea, as you can stick a couple on the side of your saucer.

Mom told me how she’d take me to the park every day when I was 9 months old. If it was a sunny day and there were other small children, she would let me play with them while she and their mothers watched us.

Mom took a Parle-G biscuit with her on these outings. Every few minutes she would break off a tiny piece and feed it to me. I only had three teeth, she told me, so I couldn’t chew the pieces, but I would gum them and apparently I enjoyed that.
