My Cat Has Destructive Tendencies

She is far worse than my dog

Opal contemplating new mischief, I am sure

My cat takes a childish glee in destroying small objects. I have to make sure balls of yarn are not within reach, or I did. I recently set aside some twine that she finds very satisfying to claw and chew up and she now leaves my other yarn alone.

She also goes after pens, sunglasses, and bits of cardboard and paper. She has shredded portions of documents, batted chewed up pens under tables, and gotten into other mischief.

It’s bizarre, because she has toys! She has a LOT of toys. And I play with her for a few minutes every day. And I let her out to go explore the neighborhood.

To be fair to her, if I make it clear that she is not to, say, destroy my sunglasses, she eventually gets it. I still hide my cell phone from her though she has stopped knocking it off the coffee table in the middle of the night. The last time I scolded her for it she seemed chagrined.

Now I just keep it out of her reach, though she hasn’t done it the few times I forgot to do that. Maybe the scolding took? But I still try not to take chances!

This is not to make her out as some little demon. She is actually incredibly sweet and loving. She will sit by me or in my lap for hours, purring. She loves to be petted and cuddled. She keeps Mom…
