View of roses and honeysuckle from my front porch

I love the scent of fresh flowers. My favorites are Oriental Lilies. When I lived in Colorado and had a large garden area, I planted cut flower beds with Stargazers, Casa Blanca, and Tom Pouce lilies.

However, aside from irises, I haven’t risked planting bulbs in Texas because I have not heard good reports from friends who garden. Some plants do better in the native heat than others.

Two plants that do well however, that I love — honeysuckle and roses.

Honeysuckle has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. I remember wandering through thickets looking for blackberries and being charmed by the scent of these lovely white and yellow flowers. I would pluck a bud and suck the sweet nectar from the end.

As far as roses — they also remind me of my childhood. They were my mother’s favorite flower and she grew five bushes in different colors. She’d find a source of cow manure to fertilize them when it was still possible to do that. And yes, they do help the roses to grow beautifully.

When we moved into my current house in Texas, I planted red and pink roses. The variety is one that does well in the local heat.
