my beautiful cat Opal

My first cat Snoopy was a feral cat. She showed up one day looking hungry so I fed her. I thought she was young — maybe 6 months? Because she was so small and scraggly. Her fur was a matted mess.

Turns out she was over a year old and had given birth to kittens.

We adopted her.

It was a gradual process. She wanted to be part of our household but we started off just leaving her a soft blanket in the sun room along with food and water.

A vet visit followed. After which she was given a thorough brushing, which involved me locking us in the bathroom with my leather fencing gloves on.

She slept with us at night and woke up with us in the morning.

I had a job where I worked out of the home several days a week. So I would be in my office. Sometimes I would play music.

I noticed something interesting.

I would play whatever music I wanted, but when I played Enya, for example, Snoopy would come find me, lie down on my desk nearby and purr. I could gently stroke her and just enjoy her presence. She purred louder for certain songs, such as this one:

Enya’s China Roses
