My father was given a chance, when my brother and I were young, to work for Aramco. But he didn’t want his wife and daughter to be raised in a place where women are second-class citizens. Also, as a Hindu, he knew he would not have the freedom to worship there. Even though he would have made a lot more money, he decided not to work in Saudi Arabia.

Under Islam if a woman is raped, she needs 4 male witnesses to testify on her behalf. Otherwise, they may assume the sex was consensual. Since sex outside of marriage is illegal under shari’ia law, sometimes women who have been raped in these countries have been sentenced to death. Honor killings can also occur if a girl makes the mistake of falling in love with someone her family doesn’t approve of.

Ironically, hymen surgery is a thing in places like Saudi Arabia, so a girl can be a virgin when she’s married…
