Opal likes to keep me company in the morning

I have a cat named Opal.

She is super sweet and very friendly. When visitors come over, unless she’s taking a nap, she will greet them. Sometimes she will jump into their laps and request petting.

No one would guess she used to be a feral cat.

About 8 years ago, a friend of mine who owned a farm asked if anyone would like to adopt a cat.

My farm lady friend had barn cats.

She would rescue feral cats. The cats had an ear clipped and had been neutered/spayed and vaccinated. They were given medical care, a safe place to sleep in the barn, fresh water, and supplemental food. While they hunted for mice, rats, snakes, etc., on the farm, they were also provided with enough additional nutrition to keep them healthy.

The reason Opal was up for adoption?

She was too friendly.

“My cats are working cats,” explained the farm lady. “My daughters love how friendly Opal is but we don’t allow animals in our house. Opal would be happier as a pet.”

I am so glad we adopted her.

She is very attached to both me and Mom. She comes running when called most of the time, though…
